Living in a city in which it barely snows in January is nice. Living a city where it never snows in January during a winter storm that blasts 7 inches of snow and 3 more of ice, is very interesting!
After spending most of my childhood in New England I am somewhat hardened to winter weather, but having spent the latter part of my life, for the most part, in places that do not see anything close to your Nor_easterner, seeing all of that winter weather and how people react to it is comical.
Before one drop of snow fell here in Atlanta all schools and government offices were closed the next day. I would have never had school as a child if that was the case! Atlanta has no plows of its own, so the city has to hire them. I live in Decatur, ALMOST Atlanta, we haven"t seen the plows!
On Sunday night when it started, myself and the roomies decided to walk through the winter weather towards the Irish Pub a couple of blocks up, for a warm glass of whiskey by the fire. When we arrived at the place they were closed. Luckily, we know the employees and were let in for a free drink. We wandered home briskly through the empty streets, everything white and wondered what tomorrow would bring.
Monday was an adventure. Most people could not drive in the snow, roads were covered with sheets of snow. EVERYONE was out walking, walking to the select few places that opened. Kids has sleds and the few cars that were on the road were peeling out and spinning around. It was funny to watch the news and hear the transplants from up north trying to give tips to the people who had no idea what they were doing and rightfully so.
A few things that I have taken note of in this winter frenzy really made me think.
It was really great seeing EVERYONE outside playing in the snow and marching around town. After enduring so many Looooooooooooooong winters in the fast paced Northeast, it was exhilarating to see people enjoying themselves in wheather that in other places just gets people down and is just a burden by January. Life is funny.
I also heard a story of a man from NY with a truck who was driving around all day since he didn't have to work and picking up people and giving them rides and pulling cars out of the snow. I guess us transplants can be of help in this city sometimes.
Huh atlanta?!?!?!!
What made me laugh the most was thinking about what would happen if it snowed 7 inches in Sarasota. How fun would that be? It would shut that place down for a while I figure, after seeing what happened in this metropolis and how the worlds busiest airport STOPPED.
Who knows what will happen tomorrow, the roads will still be covered in ice, but sooner or later everyone has to toughen up and go back to business as usual. But, it was nice...nice, very sentimental and a pleasure to see most people enjoying life out in public view.
